Sunday Report

Edition 33, Week 43: "Go With The Flow"

There's been something I've been bothered by for quite some time. Whenever I pan the camera in a game on Asobi, it always felt a bit choppy, due to the frame pacing being a bit off.

Last night I've finally been able to solve this, and also massively improve the visual performance of frame generation while I was at it. You wouldn't believe how happy I am with this personal achievement.

Especially now that I've been able to optimise and integrate the Vision Pro's Optical Flow generator on the other devices and of course having Game mode back in action.

I'm currently in the process of migrating what I know to the other platforms, which would mean it's going to look great everywhere.

Oh, and welcome to the 33rd edition of the Sunday Report!

Development

Virtual Controller 2.0

Although it's now the default Virtual Controller setting for all supported devices, there's still some final tweaks to do to get it where it's supposed to be. It's going to be great and version 1.6 of the Apple release should end up being the definitive version.

iPhone Duo

I'll be honest, working in the simulator has been limiting. I'm glad it exists, but I need the actual device to bring more of what I have in mind to the device. Luckily I was able to get my order in on time, and will have a unit on the 23rd of October and will get started on it straight away to bring the ideas I have to life!

Version 1.6 with iPhone Duo will be submitted in the next day or two and will at least get the basics done.

Steam Frame

Some bad news. I heard last week that I could see when I would be able to buy the device: it said "2027".. which was quite disappointing to be honest, especially considering how eager I am to get to work with it. When the Frame was announced I instantly submitted a developer hardware request, but that's not been met with any response as of yet.

I might just have to try hitting up eBay.

The updates;

Asobi for Apple

Game mode has returned! After a long hiatus it's back with a vengeance, and I have to say it works great! Not only that, there's better external display support, a new frame-gen option among others.

As said, frame pacing is getting a big update, iPhone Duo support is close to done, and onboarding is getting a nice update as well, which should make it much easier to get going.

Either way, version 1.6 is planned for week 43.

Asobi for Steam

Thank you all for the bug reports! There have been quite a few updates mainly focused on stability. The next update will add RGB support for controllers, new vibration strength settings, better video frame pacing and error correction and much much more!

The next version is planned for week 43.

Asobi for Android

Although dropping two updates in one week wasn't according to plan, it's still great that Asobi for Android finally has realtime 2D to 3D conversion! The second update was needed because the way external displays were being handled, it just wasn't great when connecting XR glasses.

That said, a new update will drop soon which will fix most of the aforementioned frame pacing and will add the possibility to drive the interface with a controller.

Also my Odin 2 Portal arrived, which means I can dive into any issues I might be able to find (although I haven't really found any yet like some end users have had), but damn what a fantastic device it is! (I wish I knew this earlier on)

The next update is planned for week 43.

Also, the basics for the Android/Google TV version of Asobi are done. It's all just interface work that's left.

Android TV is still planned for release this month.

Asobi for Meta Quest

I'm playing the waiting game with Meta, the app is as they say: "Under review". Considering I don't like to wait I've already done most of the work for the next update. This will implement better frame pacing, and the possibility to drive the interface with a controller. There's also some progress in supporting the Meta Xbox controller mode.

Let's hope I can finally release the app soon.

Version 1.0 is planned for week 43.

Midori for Apple

Work has begun on integrating Virtual Controller 2.0 into Midori and some bugs that were reported at the last moment, after that's done I'll finish up iPhone Duo support and make sure it's released before the device becomes available. (that said: damn that delivery date for new orders has been slipping)

Version 1.1 is planned for week 43.

In closing

I'm super excited for next week, especially about getting the better frame pacing in your hands.

More soon, and have a great Sunday!
