Edition 35, Week 45: "Clear Skies, no Cloud in sight"
Although there seems to be a global outage in relation to PS Cloud streaming, we'll just keep trucking.
Keep calm and carry on.
Anyway, welcome to another edition of the Sunday Report!
Here's what's new:
Development
Spatial Fill mode
Only thing I can say about it is: version 1.0 is ready to drop and will be in version 1.6.1 of Asobi for Apple. I think it looks great, and it'll only get better from here.
Virtual Controller 2.0
Although people already have access to it, I've spent a lot of time fine-tuning the new Virtual Controller. As you might notice with the next Android and Apple updates there have been quite a few new additions. Features like a proper way to use triggers, pressing multiple buttons at the same time, multiple stick modes, a special layout test mode and much more. A lot of work went into the details, and I don't think this will stop anytime soon.
This, together with Spatial Fill mode, should bring mobile remote and cloud gaming much closer to a native experience, like you'd get with most mobile games.
I just hope it isn't too overwhelming, given everything you can now do with it.
iPhone Duo
I hope you guys liked all the previews I shared last week for the iPhone Duo.
As you might've seen, mirroring in laptop mode, Lens mode widgets for the Virtual Controller, a 2-player virtual controller and many more refinements coming in!
I've fine-tuned it quite a bit and it's now been shipped with the latest update.
In case you missed it, here are part 1, part 2 and part 3.
Asobi 2.0
I've spoken about it before, and its first version is coming very soon. I have to admit, I've been showing it to some insiders and the response has been really good.
So that leaves me with only one question: are you ready for this?
The updates;
Asobi for Apple
I've submitted the latest update for approval, just waiting for the moment I can release it. I hope you'll all be quite pleasantly surprised at what's coming.
Not only will this update contain all the new iPhone Duo features, it'll also contain the new Spatial Fill mode and some very big changes coming to the Apple TV version.
Oh, and the Asobi overlay has had some big changes too; you might need to get used to the new disconnect button location.
I kind of don't want to ruin anything just yet, but I'll share a lot more when the update drops!
Version 1.6.1 is dropping the moment it gets approved (maybe in the next 24 hours?)
Asobi for Steam
Well, a quality-of-life update dropped late last Friday, so late that I only posted the release notes the next day. Sorry about that 😉.
The plan for this month is to update the Steam version's interface to something more fitting and modern as well; I promise it'll look good!
That said, the next few updates will focus on more stability and bug-related aspects of the app.
The next version is planned for week 45.
Asobi for Android
As you might've noticed, the latest Asobi for Android version hasn't dropped yet; I'm still waiting for it to get approved. It's a big one though, especially since this contains the Android TV client. I just hope it runs well enough on your Android TV devices; it did for me on the NVIDIA Shield, though.
But yeah, let's hope it won't take too long now.
Asobi for Meta Quest
As you might've seen, the latest update dropped last Friday, and as you might've noticed there have been quite a few changes. I still have some controller and user interface issues to resolve, which will get sorted in the next few days.
I'm also really close to getting the Xbox controller mode to function properly, so hopefully that'll drop with the next update as well.
I have some big plans to change up the whole app, one of which would be to start straight into immersive mode, and I've been working on some environments for when you're playing that way.
Plan is to release the next update in week 45.
Midori for Apple
Delays, delays, delays. It seems getting a dedicated Xbox app approved is always a bit of an adventure, which means I needed to make a couple more changes. Either way, I've submitted the versions again, and I hope it won't take too long to get through.
*fingers crossed*
In closing
Even with quite a few new features still incoming for each platform, I need to thank you all for the great support you've given me. Please keep your bug reports coming; they're a big help since I'm doing this on my own. That said, please be patient with me: investigating issues takes quite some time.
Also, I'll be in London in 2 weeks, and I'm looking into setting up a short meetup for some drinks in central London (busy schedule). The only thing I'm unsure about is how to go about it. Any suggestions?
Either way, have a great Sunday and Game on! 🔥🔥🔥
