Edition 26, Week 36: Controlling Customisation
I guess it's time for a little break and write the latest Sunday Report: Edition 26!! Woot!
It's been quite a week actually. Although I did manage to release a couple of Asobi for Steam updates, I did not manage to release a new Midori, Asobi for Android or Asobi for Apple update.
The reason is that I've been working very hard on bringing some very nice new features to Asobi before I head out next week to Japan for some important meetings, and TGS. (If anyone's up to grab a coffee/tea let me know)
So what's coming? Well:
Custom Controls
Translating a DualSense controller to a Virtual controller is a difficult task. But I think I deciphered it.
As you may know, the radial controller has been with us for some time now. The thing is, that it was only a stop-gap for what I actually had in mind and built Asobi for something better with the scaffolding being there ever since.
The original idea for the Virtual Controller was not just custom controls. I wanted something to actually work with you instead of limiting you in how to properly play. Most of my time spent on this is looking into how mobile games solve this issue. And as I said, I think I figured it out.
Introducing Virtual Controller v2.
A new Virtual controller that not only has the ability to be customised per game, edited on the fly and shared with the community, but will also be able to load up automatically to whatever you're playing.
The controls will feel like you're playing a native mobile game instead of it feeling like you're just trying to push a DualSense controller on a screen while always ending up with a sub-par experience.
I'll share more when we're close to release... in the meantime -> Check the gallery of this post.
Oh, and it's launching next week on iPhone and iPad. 👀
Remote Play Upgrades
As you might know, I unlocked PS4 local co-op via remote play last week, well not even 48 hours later I managed to unlock PS5 local co-op via remote play as well.
I need to do some clean-up and do some last bits of testing and it should be ready to go with the next update or the one after that.
As a result, Asobi will not only be the first third-party Remote Play client to have the ability to do 4p co-op via PS4 Remote Play, it will also have 4p co-op for PS5 Remote Play sessions.
I promise it won't be long.
Btw, the Steam version has the PS4 local co-op option added since last week.
Cloud Gaming Upgrades
I've managed to optimise the Cloud libraries some more, which will result in fever issues with caching of libraries and when games become available on the PlayStation Portal, they'll also be available on Asobi.
Another thing I managed to do was identify which games are Trials, so you'll never pick the wrong one. Notifications for trophies are also coming very soon and you'll be able to see how long you still have left on your trial.
Ok let's chat updates.
Asobi for Apple
Work on the next version continues and is close to complete. You'll see co-op for PS4/PS5 via remote play and the new Virtual Controller update very very soon.
The only thing holding the update back is the big new Internet Remote Play update.
I hope you guys will love it!
Asobi for Android
Version 1.1 is dropping either later tonight or tomorrow. It's mostly become a stability and bug-fix update, 3D has proven to still have some issues and will therefore be launching with version 1.1.1 - it won't be long!
Here's a preview of the patch notes:
- Adaptive triggers Haptics update
- PS4 savegame management
- Fix for virtual controller R3/L3 buttons not working
- Added button-swap for the virtual controller
- Big Internet remote play update
- Samsung DeX support
Asobi for Steam
I hope to get the build 10 up later tonight, worst-case tomorrow. Loads of fixes coming in. It's worth the wait!
Some of the features coming in:
- Windowed mode
- Native Adaptive trigger support for DualSense controller via Bluetooth
- Fix for a startup crash some of you experience
- Cloud server naming adjusted to see which city you're connected to
- Added graphics card selection in App settings
- Internet remote play added for PS5 consoles
Asobi for Meta Quest
I'll be updating the Meta Quest version soon as well. Some of the adjustments will be interface related, mostly for the immersive mode. Time to polish it up for the final release.
Midori for Apple
The performance update is still in progress, I'm trying to find why for some the stream ends prematurely. Just bear with me. When this is done, I'll start bringing the new filters, Virtual Controller v2 and the new screen filters to Midori as well.
I hope you guys have a great week ahead! Thanks again for all the feedback, it's really important to me, keep it coming!
Thanks,
